SOUTHERN CAMEROONS AMBAZONIA DATABASE IMPLICATES FRENCH CAMEROUN MILTARY

Southern Cameroon- Ambazonia Crisis Database implicates French Cameroun Military, Ambazonia Liberation fighters in five new atrocities.

On the occasion of the African Human Rights day (October 21, 2022), the Southern Cameroon – Ambazonia Crisis Database of Atrocities has cited five fresh atrocities committed in the conflict regions (Ambazonia). The Database is a volunteer initiative hosted at University of Toronto, which collects and verifies information on atrocities being perpetrated in Ambazzonia. It aims to counter impunity; deter further violence; and store information for future international justice processes and a possible national truth, justice, and reconciliation commission. The incidents, it stated, include attacks at a market, health centre, eco-village, drinking sports and remote settlements in 2021 and 2022.

“Incidents were perpetrated by the French Cameroun military, non-state armed Ambazonia fighters, or Fulani herdsmen,” it revealed. The incidents details, include the burning of Ndanifor Eco-village, in Bafut LGA where “corroborating evidence implicate the Lrc military in the burning.” The second is an attack on Pia Market in Fondonera on July 1, 2022. “Ambazonia liberation fighters appear to have perpetrated this attack, likely the Red Dragons of Lebialem. This is one of several attacks committed by Ambazonian fighters outside the Anglophone regions, reflecting the potential for violence to spread,” the database warned. The third, consisted burnings in Nwa LGA in February and March 2021. “CHRDA reporting states that armed Fulani from Nigeria, Adamawa, and Nwa Central Town were responsible. Over 100 homes and structures were reported to have been burned—the scale of destruction is significant.” The burning at the Life Abundant Program (LAP) Healthcare Centre, in Kumbo LGA also made the list. It was razed on March 1, 2021.

The database noted that “multiple sources indicate that colonial Lrc military forces fired on the building, which went up in flames.”

The fifth atrocity was the shooting of Five Civilians in Mile 90, Nsongwa. In Bamenda LGA by LRC military. Admitting the existence of numerous contradictory accounts of the perpetrators and narrative of this incident, the database noted that the case “demonstrates the challenge of ascertaining the perpetrator for many incidents in the conflict. The verified atrocities, the database remarked, “demonstrate an ongoing disregard for life and property in Ambazonia. They expose the warring parties for perpetrating human rights abuses which violate national and international laws.”  The database is not exhaustive as the colonial Lrc military killings of 2 innocent women in Ngie LGA, an innocent woman in Guzang, Batibo LGA, other killings in Bui County, menchum County, Mezam, Manyu, Meme, Fako and Ngoketungia Counties by the same colonial military only in 2021 – 2022 have not been included... the list is long
